As a key member of the Watercress Alliance, Alresford Salads continues to sponsor the annual Watercress Festival which took place this year on Sunday 15th May. Its a great chance to celebrate watercress, sample some lovely local produce from the Hampshire Fayre farmers market and to have some fun with the family.

In excess of 12,000 people attended the eighth Alresford Watercress Festival this year. The Festival is a fantastic event highly recognised in the food calendar – it just seems to get bigger and better every year.
The highlight for many was the annual contest to find the World Watercress Eating Champion, which this year attracted 18 entrants, with the winner being Rajesh Peter who has lived in Alresford for a year and a half but who was originally from India. He managed to consume two 80g bags of watercress in just 59.20 seconds. He failed, however, to break the record of 49.62 seconds set at last year’s festival by local builder Sam Batho. Although a chef , Rajesh admitted that he hadn’t really eaten much watercress before but now he will use it more in his recipes!
The festival cavalcade led by Sussex Jazz Kings brought the Watercress King and Queen into Alresford where they distributed the first watercress of the season while Hampshire Farmers’ Market showcased the best of local produce with other local companies highlighting the versatility of the crop – watercress scones, watercress pesto, watercress burgers and watercress sausages were just a few of the goods on offer.
